Sentence structure refers to the way a writer constructs a sentence. Here are three tips to help you craft good sentences.

1. Use active voice whenever possible. Active verbs describe a person doing something. "He threw the ball" is active voice, whereas "The ball was thrown by him" is passive voice.

2. Vary your sentence structure to prevent monotony. Switch around the subject/verb pairs so your sentences don't all begin the same way.

3. Use punctuation to vary the flow of your sentence rhythm. Read your writing out loud to hear how it sounds. Read slowly to catch whether the flow of the sentence is off.

Books have been a constant in my life since childhood and I honestly believe they have shaped the person I am today. Growing up, "Anne of Green Gables" was one of my favorite series.

Anne Shirley is one of the wisest people I know. I learned so much from her during my teenage years. In particular, I learned that there is beauty in everything.

I love to be outdoors in nature. I always think of Anne when walking on a wooden path or making sandcastles at the beach with my daughter––something I hope to be able to do again this summer.

If there’s one lesson that 2020 taught me, it’s to SLOW DOWN.

Prior to starting my business, I was struggling with the fast-paced, 9-to-5 lifestyle I was living. I never truly felt present because I was always busy. Society has given the impression that if you’re not busy doing all the things, then you’re not a productive human.

I disagree. There’s a difference between busyness and productivity.

Since slowing down and structuring my days in a way that works for me, I’ve been more productive than ever while still enjoying life. You’d be amazed at what you can accomplish within a twenty minute pomodoro session.

Busyness is overrated. Life is for living.

Writing daily is a habit that took a long time to stick. A few years ago, I would only sit down to write when I was feeling motivated––which wasn't very often.

Motivation comes and goes, and therefore can't always be relied upon. A favorite quote of mine from an unknown source is, "You will never always be motivated, so you must learn to be disciplined." This can be applied to any area in life, not just writing. I'm a creature of habit and routine, so learning to be disciplined has helped me make writing a part of my daily life.

Here are two productivity tips to help make writing a habit:
1. Decide on a writing schedule and stick to it. I use my planner for this and love ticking it off once completed.
2. Write first; edit later. Editing as you go will only slow you down. As an editor, this is sometimes hard because I scrutinize my words. But I find that when I just write, the words flow a lot easier.

The concept of "show, don't tell" is important in writing. Showing the actions and feelings instead of telling what happened is more meaningful and makes a stronger emotional connection with your readers.

Here's a simple example.
Tell: Pamela was blind.
Show: Pamela felt for the chair with a white cane.

"Show" keeps readers actively involved in the story, while "tell" keeps them outside the story. As Anne said, "Tell the readers a story!"
