As a copyeditor, one of the main things I look for while editing is consistency. I’ve listed some of the commonly confused spellings that I’ve come across while working on different projects.

Choosing whether to use American English or British English is entirely your choice. When writing your story, however, remember that consistency is key. Inconsistencies such grey vs. gray may seem nitpicky on the surface level, but small details like these can make or break a reader’s experience.

I remember reading an interesting thread in a FB group where a British author had no idea that here in America, we call chrysanthemums “mums.” This caused quite a bit of stress because he then began wondering if his audience—American readers—would think he was talking about plants instead of someone’s mother!

Language is fascinating and there’s never a dull moment when you work with words.
